Last Thursday our class had the privilege to listen to Katy Sewall talk about her podcast, the Bitter Sweet Life, and her journey to get to where she is today. She has had an extremely interesting life and has worked hard to be successful in her field.
One huge take-away I got from Katy’s presentation was that in the radio and podcast business it is extremely important to be authentic in an improvisation situation. If you aren’t authentic people can recognize it especially in a podcast. Due to the fact that we have access to such a wide array of options for podcasts now-a-days if people find you inauthentic they will find someone else to listen to. Another huge lesson I learned from Katy is that it is important to recognize what your good at and recognize the availability of jobs in that field. Both of these are vital ingredients if you want to acquire a job in the field you are interested in. This brings me to the final lesson I learned from Katy and that is to be passionate about your profession. It was easy to recognize how her face lit up when she talked about her interview with the kid who made friends with crows. Her love for crows and podcasts gives her the ability to love her job. No one should go through life dreading their job.
I really enjoyed hearing Katy speak. She obviously has a lot of experience in the field of podcasting and it was great to hear from someone who’s done so much.
